Joan Laporta lavished the cash since returning to Camp Nou as president, bringing in players like Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha this past summer while implementing significant cost cuts and utilising multiple “economic levers” to acquire finances.
More additions are required in January, with the team’s backline needing special attention in light of Gerard Pique’s unexpected retirement. But making it happen might be challenging.
The club currently pays almost €600 million in wages annually. With their present salary outlay, the Catalans would go above their allowed cap for the upcoming season and risk going against La Liga’s new financial regulations. A possible punishment is a transfer embargo.
Barcelona needs to cut their debt to €400 million, ideally by the summer, therefore it will be challenging to add new players before then. They need to get rid of certain players with high salaries and make sure the new players are paid far less.
