December 24, (THEWILL) –Â Cadiz have negotiated a six-month loan deal with Barcelona and Sevilla for striker Luuk de Jong, who is currently deliberating on his future with the Catalan club.
De Jong joined Barcelona on the summer transfer deadline day, but after playing a little role under former manager Ronald Koeman, he has struggled for minutes since Xavi’s return to Camp Nou, and Barcelona are set to terminate his loan.
The issue is that Sevilla does not want De Jong back, thus Barcelona will have to find a team willing to take over their loan contract for the next six months.
This is what they have found in Cadiz, who have agreed to sign the tall Dutchman for the remainder of the season after striking a deal with both Barcelona and Sevilla.
According to the details, which were later confirmed by Catalunya Radio, all that is needed for the move to be made public is De Jong’s consent, and there is no assurance that he will approve the change.
Cadiz are now 19th in La Liga, having scored 15 goals in 18 games, the second-lowest total in the league, but being only one point shy of safety.
Cadiz have five attackers on their books, but aside from Choco Lozano’s five goals, they have struggled up front, with Alvaro Negredo being the only other forward to score.
Cadiz needs more firepower, and Barcelona is desperate to give it to them for their own purposes. De Jong’s departure would clear the way for the signing of Manchester City’s Ferran Torres.
Xavi wants Torres to play as a centre striker, and Barcelona is trying to complete the deal before Christmas, with the 27th of December being proposed as a possible date.
