December 17, (THEWILL) – Barcelona were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Valencia on Saturday evening, denting their La Liga title defense aspirations. A goal from Joao Felix had put Barcelona ahead, but a stunning long-range equaliser from Hugo Guillamon earned Valencia a share of the spoils.
The match saw Barcelona create multiple chances, only to be repeatedly thwarted by an inspired performance from Valencia goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili. Despite Barcelona’s domination of possession and territory, profligate finishing meant they were unable to capitalise on their advantage.
The deadlock was finally broken 10 minutes into the second half when a superb pass from Frenkie de Jong set up Raphinha to cross for Felix to tap home. However, Barcelona’s slender lead lasted just 20 minutes before Guillamon’s spectacular equaliser from the edge of the box flew into the top corner.
Barcelona threw everything forward late on seeking a winner, but a remarkable double save from Mamardashvili and defender Yarek Gasiorowski denied Raphinha. Xavi’s side were ultimately forced to settle for a draw that leaves them six points off the top of La Liga as their winless run extended to three matches.
With arch rivals Real Madrid in second place and surprise package Girona leading the League, Barcelona must quickly regroup as they seek to revive their fading title defense hopes. Creative inspiration and ruthlessness in front of goal is badly needed if they are to continue to be in contention this season.
