September 24, (THEWILL) – Bayer Leverkusen continued their recent revival with a comfortable 4-1 home victory over Heidenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday. A brace from Nigerian striker Victor Boniface helped inspire the win for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Leverkusen dominated the opening half hour and deservedly went ahead on nine minutes when Boniface finished smartly from Exequiel Palacios’ pass. For his second goal of the afternoon, the Nigerian scored from the penalty spot after the break, a goal that took the match tally to 3-1.
Before then, Heidenheim briefly levelled matters through on-loan Eren Dinkci after he made the most of a counter attack play. However, Leverkusen retook the lead quickly through Jonas Hofmann. Late on, after Boniface’s penalty took it to 3-1, Nadiem Amiri added a fourth to put the gloss on a confident performance.
The win lifts Leverkusen up to joint top of the Bundesliga table after a thrilling start to the campaign. Victories over Mainz and Hacken in the past week suggest Alonso has turned things around after replacing Gerardo Seoane.
Heidenheim are 13th after coming into this game with an impressive away record. Yet, they ultimately had no answer to Leverkusen’s attacking verve on the day, with Boniface clinical in front of goal once more.
