May 29, (THEWILL) – Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, have appointed former Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany, as their new manager, on a three-year contract. The surprising move comes after the Bavarian club parted ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2023/2024 season.
Kompany leaves his role at recently-relegated Burnley to take over at the Allianz Arena. Despite failing to keep the Clarets in the English Premier League this campaign, the 38-year-old impressed by winning the Championship title last season playing an attractive brand of football.
“I am looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It is a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football,” Kompany said. “If the base is there, success will come.”
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen backed the Belgian as the “right coach” for the club, despite Kompany being further down their list of managerial targets initially. The former defender had a legendary playing career at Man City before managing Anderlecht for two seasons.
Kompany faces a huge task in Munich to rebuild Bayern as a force domestically and in Europe once again. His tactical philosophy and man-management skills will be put to the test at one of the biggest clubs in world football.
