August 23, (THEWILL) – Bavarian heavyweights Bayern Munich on Monday confirmed the contract extension of Joshua Kimmich until 2025 with the Bundesliga champions at the Allianz Arena.
The 26-year-old German international was content to remain at the Munich side for more years saying: “The most important reason for my contract extension is that I can pursue my passion with joy every day here at Bayern.
“I have a team where I can achieve everything and a lot of teammates have become real friends. That’s why I started playing football in the first place, because it should be fun.”
Kimmich, who plays as a defensive midfielder or right-back, has made 264 appearances in all competitions for the German champions. In that timeframe, he has been with the team through six Bundesliga titles, three DFB Pokals, one Champions League, five Supercups, a FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Supercup titles.
Herbert Hainer, the president of the club was pleased to have Kimmich on their squad sheet for longer. He said: “We’re happy to be going into the future with Joshua Kimmich. He’s developed into a top international player with us and it’s important to keep players of this quality in our team for the long term.
“With him, Bayern have the best chances of achieving great and ambitious goals again in the future.”
Known for his versatility, passing, shooting, tackling and aggression, Kimmich’s goal against Borussia Dortmund in the Supercup of the 2020/2021 campaign was voted as the Goal of the Season by fans of the Bundesliga club ahead of the magnificent scissor-kick goal that Robert Lewandowski scored in the home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The defensive midfielder joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2015 for an initial contract lasting until 2020. In the 2019/2020 season when Bayern won the continental treble, Kimmich was included in the UEFA Team of the Year, the FIFA FIFPro Men’s World11 and was recognized as the UEFA Champions League Defender of the Season.
