March 24, (THEWILL) – Former Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has been announced as the new head coach of Bayern Munich, replacing Julian Nagelsmann who has been sacked along with his assistant coaches Dino Toppmoller, Benjamin Glück and Xaver Zembrod.
Tuchel has signed a deal that runs until June 2025 and will take charge for the first time against his former club Borussia Dortmund on April 1. The decision to replace Nagelsmann reportedly came just days after Bayern suffered a 2-1 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, leaving them a point behind Bundesliga leaders Dortmund heading into the international break.
Nagelsmann signed a five-year deal with Bayern in April 2021, and although he won the Bundesliga in his first season in charge, his team suffered disappointing defeats in the UEFA Champions League and German Cup.
Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic did not mince words in his criticism of the team’s performance in their loss to Leverkusen, saying they lacked drive, mentality, duel, and assertiveness.
Bayern are bidding for their 11th Bundesliga title in a row, and Tuchel’s appointment will be seen as an attempt to turn things around as they aim to reclaim the top spot in the league and make good in their run in Europe.
