February 18, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich’s chances of winning an 11th straight Bundesliga title took another dent after they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach.
The German giants were dealt a massive blow in the eighth minute when Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a messy challenge, leaving Bayern to play with 10 men for the majority of the game. Lars Stindl, Jonas Hofmann and Marcus Thuram all scored to secure Gladbach a deserved victory. Hofmann was the standout player, scoring one goal and providing two assists in a masterful display.
Bayern had won four of their last five league games, but they struggled to find their rhythm against Gladbach. The eighth-minute red card to Upamecano for bringing down Alassane Plea made it a disastrous start for the visitors. Stindl fired a low strike into the bottom-right corner after a free-kick on the right was played by Hofmann to the edge of the penalty area to get things moving.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting equalised Stindl’s opener before the break and Mathys Tel struck late, but even that goal was not enough to salvage a point for the reigning champions with Hofmann scoring in the 55th minute and Thuram sealing the win in the 84th minute for Gladbach.
Bayern will now be looking over their shoulders as they could be knocked down to second place if Union Berlin defeat Schalke on Sunday. Borussia Dortmund also have the opportunity to draw level on points with Bayern if they beat Hertha Berlin.
