February 14, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich has secured a valuable 1-0 first leg lead against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, dominating the French team in a match that saw PSG fail to take a single shot on target in the first half.
While PSG seemed content to allow Bayern to dominate the ball from the start, the German team took advantage of the lack of opposition and made their quality count on the scoreboard. Substitute Alphonso Davies made an immediate impact with a cross, and Kingsley Coman finished neatly under the body of PSG’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to edge Bayern into the lead.
While PSG had more of the ball after the break, it was not until Kylian Mbappe was introduced that they began to show signs of improvement. Mbappe had the ball in the net late on, but VAR correctly ruled it out for an offside in the build-up.
Benjamin Pavard produced an incredible block to keep the scores level when Lionel Messi went close seconds before the end of the game. Pavard, instrumental in several of Bayern’s major chances, received a red card in injury time, but it was too late to affect the outcome of the game.
Bayern will go into the second leg with a significant advantage, but PSG will be looking to make a comeback in what promises to be an exciting match. Before then, PSG will have an opportunity to end their three-match losing streak when they face Lille in Ligue 1 on Sunday, while Bayern will return to Bundesliga action on Saturday against Borussia Monchengladbach.
