August 13, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid began their La Liga title defence with a hard-fought 2-0 victory away to Athletic Club on Saturday.
Despite Athletic’s intense pressing early on, Los Blancos were able to capitalise on their chances to secure the three points. The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when Dani Carvajal’s tenacity created a chance for Rodrygo, who finished coolly past Unai Simon. Real Madrid doubled their advantage before half-time when Jude Bellingham volleyed home David Alaba’s corner.
Athletic Club came out stronger in the second half and carved out several opportunities, but were unable to find a way past Andriy Lunin in the Madrid goal. Late blocks from Aurelien Tchouameni and David Alaba were vital in preserving the clean sheet.
In the end, Real Madrid were able to hold on for a vital away win to kick off their title defence. They will hope to build momentum when they host newly-promoted Almeria next Saturday at the Bernabeu. Meanwhile, also on Saturday, Athletic Club will visit Osasuna, as both will be looking to build on their opening weekend results as the new season gets into full swing.
