February 11, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain’s poor form continued as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Monaco in Ligue 1.
With key players, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, absent due to injury, PSG were unable to overcome a strong Monaco side. The home team got off to an early lead as Aleksandr Golovin, poked home after Youssouf Fofana’s powerful run set up Wissam Ben Yedder, for a blocked attempt. Ben Yedder added two more goals, punishing PSG’s defensive shortcomings, as the visitors suffered their third league defeat since the turn of the year.
Ben Yedder’s performance was a standout for Monaco, as he became the player to score the most goals against PSG since the team’s takeover by Qatar Sports Investments. He currently stands joint-top of Ligue 1’s scoring charts with 14 goals this season.
Neymar, the third member of PSG’s forward trio, was anonymous, managing just one shot and failing to create any chances for his team-mates. This loss will add to the concern of PSG fans as the team continues to struggle.
Despite their poor form, the Parisians will likely improve for their upcoming UEFA Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich, with Messi expected to return to the starting lineup. However, PSG’s recent losses have given Marseille the opportunity to cut their lead at the top of the table. Monaco will head to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League knockout round on Thursday.
