Bendel Insurance Top NPFL Table After Weekend Of Draws, Wins, Red Card

October 16, (THEWILL) – The third round of matches in the 2023/2024 Nigerian Premier Football League saw a mix of wins, draws and losses over the weekend. Six teams were victorious, while eight others had to settle for a share of the points.

Bendel Insurance got the weekend off to a winning start by defeating Plateau United 1-0 at home. A first-half penalty by Benjamin Taminu proved the difference, keeping Bendel top of the table despite having played fewer games than some rivals. Elsewhere, Katsina United and Lobi Stars played out a goalless stalemate. The match between Rivers United and Kwara United ended in the same 0-0 scoreline.

There was late drama for Sunshine Stars as they drew 1-1 with Heartland as a 74th-minute Patrick Nwogbaga goal levelled matters. Meanwhile, Abia Warriors claimed their first away win by beating Kano Pillars, who have managed just one victory all season. A red card for Bayelsa United’s Oluwaseun Solomon helped Remo Stars record an important 2-1 away victory, with Sikiru Alimi and Olamilekan Adams on target.

The weekend’s other winners were Enugu Rangers, who won 2-1 against Niger Tornadoes, and Enyimba secured their first league victory this term by defeating Akwa United 3-2. Shooting Stars also triumphed 2-1 against Gombe United, thanks to a Malomo Ayodeji brace.

Sporting Lagos and Dakkada played out a goalless draw as Christian Nwoke kept his third clean sheet of the campaign for Sporting. Struggling Akwa United currently prop up the table with just one point after that loss to Enyimba last time out.
