August 29, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid triumphed 3-1 against Espanyol, thanks to two goals from captain, Karim Benzema, in a dramatic finish to keep their perfect record through three La Liga games.
Vinicius Junior’s well-executed goal was cancelled out by a strike from Joselu, who has made it a habit to score against Madrid since spending three years in the early part of his career with the capital club’s “Castilla” B team.
After the break, Benzema had a goal disallowed and Joselu came close to scoring again before Benzema converted a cross from Rodrygo to secure the victory.
As the game came to a frantic conclusion, Espanyol goalkeeper, Benjamin Lecomte, was dismissed in stoppage time, and Benzema added his second from the next free kick.
Next Saturday in La Liga, Real Madrid will host Betis before the start of the UEFA Champions League campaign the following week. The following Sunday’s matchup features Espanyol versus Athletic Bilbao.
