January 07, (THEWILL) – On Saturday, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema scored a penalty against Villarreal, moving him level with legendary figure, Alfredo Di Stefano, in La Liga’s all-time scoring charts.
Even with the goal, Madrid fell to a 2-1 defeat, as THEWILL reported. It was a loss that meant that Los Blancos missed the opportunity to overtake Barcelona at the top of the league.
Benzema’s goal, his 227th in 424 appearances, came in contrast to Di Stefano’s 227 goals in 329 appearances. Despite their similar goal totals, Di Stefano is widely considered the more complete player, with Brazilian teammate Canario stating “he was the number one.”
In terms of all-time La Liga scorers, Benzema and Di Stefano currently sit in joint sixth, with Raul, Hugo Sanchez, Telmo Zarra, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi ranking above them.
However, Messi currently holds the top spot with an impressive 474 goals, which is incredibly more than double the goals accumulated by both Di Stefano and Benzema.
