January 07, (THEWILL) – Mikel Arteta has hit back at criticism of his touchline behaviour during Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Newcastle United on Tuesday.
The Gunners’ manager was involved in a heated confrontation with Magpies’ boss, Eddie Howe, after referee, Andrew Madley, chose not to award Arsenal a late penalty. Arteta called the decision “scandalous” after the match and was subsequently criticised for his actions.
However, Arteta defended his behaviour, saying he always acts in the best interests of the club and that some of the commentaries about his touchline actions has been unjust. Meanwhile, the FA charged Arsenal on Friday, for failing to control their players in the aftermath of the incident.
As THEWILL reported, Manchester City took advantage of Arsenal’s draw with Newcastle by beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, closing the Gunners’ lead at the top of the Premier League to five points.
Arteta’s team will play League One side Oxford United in the FA Cup third round on Monday, with Emile Smith Rowe potentially set to feature, having not played for the club since September, due to a groin injury.
