January 17, (THEWILL) – Karim Benzema has reportedly filed a defamation lawsuit against French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, on Tuesday. The complaint accuses Darmanin of claiming the forward, who plays for Saudi club, Al-Ittihad and formerly played for Real Madrid, has “notorious” links to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The dispute began when Darmanin reacted to a social media post by Benzema expressing support for civilians in Gaza affected by bombardments. Darmanin then stated “Karim Benzema has notorious links, as we all know, with the Muslim Brotherhood.”
The Muslim Brotherhood is a Sunni Islamist group that advocates using the Quran to structure Muslim families, communities, and countries under Sharia law. Benzema’s lawyer denies any connection, stating: “This is false! Karim Benzema has never had the slightest link with this organisation.” The lawyer argues praying for bombing victims is not equivalent to supporting Hamas or the Muslim Brotherhood.
The complaint alleges Darmanin’s statements damage Benzema’s reputation and honour. It has been filed with the Court of Justice of the Republic, the only body that can prosecute ministers for actions committed in office.
Benzema feels he is being used as an instrument in political games due to his fame. His lawyer denounces the “unacceptable exploitation” of Benzema as a symbol. Meanwhile, Darmanin’s team points to actions like Benzema’s refusal to sing the national anthem as indications he supports rigid Islam.
