May 31, (THEWILL) – After helping Real Madrid win their 14th European title, Karim Benzema has been awarded the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League Player of the Season.
Benzema’s spectacular header against Chelsea in the quarter-finals was also named Goal of the Season, while teammate, Vinicius Junior, was voted Young Player of the Season.
The duo were crucial in Real Madrid’s incredible run to the final in Paris on Saturday, where Vinicius’ goal was enough to secure a 1-0 triumph over Liverpool.
Benzema led the European scoring charts with 15 goals this season, including a joint-high ten goals in the knockout stage. The forward, who is a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or this season, was instrumental in stunning comeback victories over PSG, Chelsea, and Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Vinicius scored four goals and added six assists throughout the competition, a total only surpassed by Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.
