January 24, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema’s home was robbed while he was playing in the club’s 2-2 LaLiga tie with Elche on Sunday, according to Spanish police.
According to sources close to the investigation, the break-in occurred between 3 and 7 pm local time (9 am – 1 pm ET).
Benzema, on the other hand, was in action at the Bernabeu. Before being subbed off injured in the 58th minute, he missed a penalty, the first time he has missed a penalty for the club.
As THEWILL reported, Madrid had to come back from a 2-0 deficit, with a better penalty from Luka Modric and a 92nd-minute header from Eder Militao, to tie the game at the death.
However, this is not the first time Benzema’s home has been broken into. While playing for Real Madrid versus Barcelona in El Clasico in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi final in February 2019, the France international’s home was broken into.
In recent years, a number of footballers’ homes in Madrid have been burglarised, with the criminals breaking in while the players are on the pitch for their clubs.
Casemiro, Isco, and Lucas Vazquez, all Real Madrid teammates, have been robbed. Casemiro’s house was broken into in September 2019 when his wife and daughter were inside.
A similar break-in occurred two days later at the residence of then-Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.
