July 30, (THEWILL) – Simone Biles, the 27-year-old American gymnast, is favoured to win her first Olympic gymnastics gold medal since 2016, in the women’s team final on Tuesday. Biles, widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time, appears to be in top form leading the United States team in what many consider a redemption effort.
At the Rio 2016 Games, Biles won four gold medals. However, during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she experienced the “twisties,” a mental block that affects gymnasts’ spatial awareness. This led to her withdrawal from most events, including the team final, where the USA took silver behind Russia.
Despite facing criticism from some quarters for prioritising her mental health over national interests, Biles received widespread support for her openness about mental health issues. Now, with 23 world championship titles to her name, she emphasises that their pursuit of the team crown is driven by personal passion and patriotism.
The US team dominated the qualifying rounds, with Biles impressing spectators in Paris on Sunday. She competed with a taped left calf after a minor injury but still delivered a strong performance. Biles stated, “We do it for ourselves and the love of the sport and the love for representing the USA.”
The women’s team final represents an opportunity for the United States to reclaim their position at the top of Olympic gymnastics. With Biles leading the charge, the team aims to add another gold medal to their collection, following their victories in 2012 and 2016.
