April 25, (THEWILL) – Billionaire and football enthusiast, Dozy Mmobuosi, is shaking up the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) with an expanded football tournament.
The tournament will be called the Dozy Mmobuosi Super Cup Football Tournament and will feature 12 top teams from the league. The total prize pool for the event is a record-breaking N1.2 billion, with the winning team taking home N1 billion and the runners-up receiving N200 million.
THEWILL recalls that the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation organised an inaugural preseason Super Cup for the NPFL, which involved Shooting Stars, Enugu Rangers, Enyimba and the newly promoted Bendel Insurance. Shooting Stars took home the unprecedented N100m prize money for the competition.
Mmobuosi’s aim is to increase the level of football in Nigeria by allowing teams to invest more resources in players, facilities, and infrastructure. This, in turn, will attract top talent to the league, and enhance the overall standard of football in the country. The Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation, in partnership with the NPFL, will organise the tournament.
Mmobuosi’s influence in the football world is expanding, as he is currently in the advanced stages of purchasing Championship club Sheffield United. The English Football League (EFL) is scrutinising his funding and business models. However, Mmobuosi’s company, Tingo Inc, recently published its latest financial results after an audit by a US-based branch of Deloitte, which could lend further credence to his bid.
