November 05, (THEWILL) – United Kingdom-based fintech billionaire, Dozy Mmobuosi, has officially unveiled his new football club, Club 1472, in Lagos.
Chief Executive Officer of Club 1472, Dr Segun Sanni, said the format adopted to unveil the club to fans was carefully planned to bring the team to the people. “We started a procession from Teslim Balogun Stadium, the former UAC Ground, which has traditionally hosted sports in Lagos. The parade with bands, motorcades and our players ended at the Union Bank Sports Ground on Bode Thomas with a cocktail event for media and guests,” explained Sanni.
Club 1472 will be competing in the Nigeria National League (NNL) in the upcoming season. “Our target is to join the elite Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) next season,” Sanni added.
A number of celebrities with roots in Surulere have already identified with the club and joined the unveiling ceremony. According to Sanni, “We want to build a club that belongs to the people and we intentionally reached out to prominent Surulere residents, including popular Nollywood actors and politicians, who were enthusiastic about the club.”
The launch of Club 1472 marks an exciting new chapter in Nigerian football and the realisation of dreams for many in the Surulere community. It signals a shift in perspective for Mmobuosi, whose £90 million takeover of EPL side Sheffield United failed to materialise.
