April 29, (THEWILL) – Boca Juniors have terminated the contract of head coach, Fernando Gago, just days after losing to their fierce rivals, River Plate. The decision was confirmed on Tuesday by club director, Mauricio Serna, who stated: “We’ve come to a decision that Fernando Gago has reached the end of the road.”
The 39-year-old manager, who began his playing career with the Buenos Aires club, held the position for only six months after being appointed in October 2024. His tenure concludes with a record of 17 victories, six draws, and seven defeats across all competitions. The weekend loss against River Plate proved decisive for club leadership.
Serna, a former Boca and Colombian midfielder, admitted the difficulty of the decision given Gago’s history with the club: “It was not easy, he is one of us but that is what we are here for, to make decisions.” The dismissal follows mounting pressure after Boca’s elimination from the Copa Libertadores in February at the second round stage.
The timing of the managerial change is notable as Boca Juniors prepare for their upcoming participation in the Club World Cup. The team will travel to the United States in June for the prestigious tournament, now needing to appoint a replacement quickly to prepare for the international competition.
