BEVERLY HILL, January 16, (THEWILL) – The jail term of British-Ghanaian rapper, Andy Anokye aka Solo, who held four women against their wish and repeatedly raped them, has been increased.
The Court of Appeal ruled that the 45-year-old Grime star will serve an additional six years.
THEWILL had reported that Anokye was charged at Bristol Crown Court of 30 charges that spanned the course of two years.The charges include 21 rapes, five counts of false imprisonment, two counts of assault by penetration as well as two assaults which resulted from bodily harm.
The rapper, in July last year, was handed a 29-year extended sentence, which comprised a 24-year jail term as well as an extended licence period of five years.
In a hearing on Friday, senior judges affirmed that the sentence was “unduly lenient” and increased it to 35 years, which is a 30-year jail term and five years additional licence.
According to the judges, the original sentence did not show the fact he executed multiple offences of rape against four different victims.
According to the Solicitor General, Michael Ellis QC, the decision to increase the sentence was because the court “recognises the severity of the abuse” and “the danger he poses to the public”.
A bid by the rapper to appeal against the length of his original sentence was prevented.
The jury played a graphic video clips filmed by the rapper in which Anokye was seen interrogating the women about previous sexual partners, hitting hem, insulting them, and raping them. The rapper claimed the acts were part of consensual role play.
Judge William Hart, passing sentence in 2020, stated that Anokye had “become addicted” to the “perverted pleasure” he derived from abusing the women.
According to the judge, his career “was flourishing at the time” and he “would have gone to great heights”.
Hart added: “They are in no way tarnished by your misdeeds which you carried out in a private way.”
