The losses have cut across generations, from veteran performers who helped build the industry to younger stars whose careers were still flourishing. Their passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans and filmmakers, who celebrated the impact they made on Nigerian cinema.
While some died after battling illness, others passed away unexpectedly, leaving many in shock. Their legacy, however, lives on through the memorable characters they brought to life on screen.
Here is a look at some of the Nollywood stars the industry has lost in 2026.
Alexx Ekubo

Actor and model Alexx Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 after battling advanced metastatic kidney cancer. His family confirmed the cause of death, and he was laid to rest on June 18 in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State, following funeral rites attended by family, colleagues and fans.
Ekubo rose to fame after emerging as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition. He went on to become one of Nollywood’s most recognizable leading men, starring in films such as “Weekend Getaway,” “Lagos Cougars,” “Afamefuna: An Nwa Boi Story,” and “Omo Ghetto: The Saga.”
Off-screen, Ekubo was admired for his versatility, fashion sense and strong social media presence, making him one of the most recognisable faces of his generation.
Oby Kechere (Madam Koi Koi)
Veteran actress and filmmaker Oby Kechere, popularly known as Madam Koi Koi, died on April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.
She was best known for playing the unforgettable “Ms Koi Koi” in the classic comedy “Aki na Ukwa” alongside Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme.
Her career also extended into filmmaking, where she contributed to the growth of the industry and served as Vice Chairman of the Abuja chapter of the Directors Guild of Nigeria.
Tope Osoba
Yoruba actress and producer Temitope “Tope” Osoba became the latest Nollywood star to be lost in 2026.
News of her death was announced on Wednesday, August 5, a day after she passed away on Tuesday at the age of 40, leaving colleagues and fans in shock.
Osoba had previously shared her battle with breast cancer and later announced her recovery before returning to acting. Following her death, her family dismissed reports claiming she died from cancer, describing them as false and urging the public to rely only on official statements.
She was widely known for her roles in Yoruba films, including “Ile Owo,” “Omo Iya Kan,” and “Gucci Girls.” She also used her platform to speak about her breast cancer experience, encouraging women to prioritise awareness and early detection.
Ajara Lasisi (Aunty Ajara)
Yoruba actress Ajara Lasisi, popularly known as Aunty Ajara, died in February 2026 after a prolonged battle with liver disease, despite public fundraising efforts to support her treatment.
A familiar face in Yoruba cinema, she became popular for her comic supporting roles, often portraying outspoken neighbours, market women and relatable family characters.
Her comic timing and natural performances earned her a loyal following among audiences.
Bamidele Oluwatope (Okemesi)
Actor Bamidele Oluwatope, popularly known as Okemesi, died in February 2026 after battling health complications.
