August 06, (THEWILL) – Ese Brume, Ruth Usoro, and Prestina Oluchi Ochonogor have all qualified for the women’s Long Jump final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Brume, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist, secured an automatic spot with a jump of 6.76m. Usoro and Ochonogor also earned places among the final 12 jumpers with impressive leaps of 6.68m and 6.65m respectively.
Brume, who holds the Nigerian, African, and Commonwealth long jump titles, aims to become the first Nigerian track and field athlete to win two individual Olympic medals. She has a history of winning medals in numerous competitions representing Nigeria and hopes to continue this trend in Paris.
For debutants Usoro and Ochonogor, the Long Jump event final at the Stade de France presents an opportunity to make their mark on the Olympic stage. Their qualification alongside Brume marks a strong showing for Nigeria in this event after the extended no-show for the country on the podium in France.
The Women’s Long Jump holds a special place in Nigerian Olympic history. It is one of the few events where Nigeria has won all three medal colours. Chioma Ajunwa claimed gold at the Atlanta 1996 Games, Blessing Okagbare secured silver at the Beijing 2008 Games, and Brume completed the set with bronze in Tokyo.
With three athletes in the final, Nigeria has a strong chance of adding to its medal tally in this event. The Paris 2024 Olympics provide an opportunity for these athletes to write their names in the record books and potentially bring more glory to their nation in track and field.
