July 25, (THEWILL) – In the women’s long jump event at the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon, Nigerian Ese Brume brought further glory to the country’s image when she won the Long Jump silver medal.
She finished in second place behind German Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo, who on Monday morning, soared to a second straight World Championship gold in the Women’s Long Jump with a final leap of 7.12 metres.
For Brume, who had previously earned a bronze medal at the World Championship, a silver medal — achieved with a leap of 7.02m — was literally a leap forward. Leticia Oro Melo of Brazil finished third with a 6.89m jump.
THEWILL recalls that Mihambo similarly triumphed over Brume to win gold at the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan last year.
Still, it was another joyous moment for Team Nigeria as Brume’s second-place finish came just as they were still celebrating the thrilling Tobi Amusan, who earned the country her first-ever World Record and historic World Championship gold medal in the 100-metre hurdles. Amusan joined her Team Nigeria compatriot to celebrate.
