May 16, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his joy and congratulated Hon. Sani Ahmed Toro, a former General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and ex-Member of the House of Representatives, on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

The President commended Toro for his valuable services to the nation and significant contributions to the development of football. In a statement issued on Monday, by his Spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, President Buhari acknowledged Toro’s years of hard work as the first Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigeria Professional Football League Governing Board.

During Toro’s tenure as NFA scribe, Nigeria’s Super Eagles clinched the gold medal in Tunisia 1994, marking the country’s first qualification and participation in the 1994 FIFA World Cup held in the United States, where they advanced to the second round. President Buhari emphasised the noteworthy achievements under Toro’s leadership, highlighting that Nigeria’s Men’s Olympic Football team, famously known as the “Dream Team,” secured the gold medal in Atlanta 1996.

Led by captain Nwankwo Kanu and accompanied by legendary players like Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Celestine Babayaro, Sunday Oliseh, Daniel “the bull” Amokachi, Emmanuel Amuneke, Tijani Babangida, and others, Nigeria became the first African nation to claim the coveted title.

The President expressed his belief that Toro, alongside other administrators, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to create these cherished memories for Nigerians, deserves gratitude and well wishes.
