January 20, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Super Eagles were on Wednesday applauded by President Muhammadu Buhari for keeping optimism alive at the ongoing TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon by winning all of their group matches and advancing to the second round of the tournament in style.
According to a statement released Wednesday night by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media, President Muhammadu Buhari urged the Augustine Eguavoen-led team to maintain and even improve on the outstanding form that propelled them to the top of the group stage, as Nigeria aspires to a total of seven emphatic victories in this competition.
The formal statement read: “President Buhari trusts that the positive reputation of good sportsmanship the travelling fans, sportswriters and the football team have demonstrated in Cameroon will continue to enliven the importance of sports, particularly football, as an enabler of development, peace, tolerance, friendship and cooperation.
“The President wishes the Super Eagles the very best, pledging that his administration would continue to support the efforts of international, regional and national football organisations to use the sport as a tool to build a better and peaceful world.”
On Wednesday, Eguavoen’s men finished their group stage campaign with a 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau, earning them the accolade of being the only team to finish with nine points so far.
