December 16, (THEWILL) – Burnley sank deeper into relegation trouble on Saturday, with a 2-0 home loss to Everton, managed by longtime former Clarets boss Sean Dyche. First-half goals from Amadou Onana and Michael Keane were enough to secure a fourth straight English Premier League win for the Toffees, who have climbed away from the drop zone after their points deduction.
Dyche enjoyed tremendous success over 10 years at Turf Moor, winning two promotions and establishing Burnley as a solid top-flight club against the odds. Yet, he was sacked in April 2022 with the club battling relegation and received a warm reception on his return with Everton on Saturday.
The visitors silenced the home crowd by taking the lead in the 19th minute when Onana powered in a header from a corner. Keane doubled Everton’s advantage in the 25th minute with a low shot from distance that deflected in off Burnley’s Dara O’Shea.
Burnley improved after the break but struggled to create clear scoring chances, with their best opportunity coming when Sander Berge rattled the crossbar from long range. Everton defended stoutly to secure a vital victory and condemn Burnley to an eighth defeat in nine league games.
The Clarets remain stuck on just eight points from 17 matches, sitting one spot above rock bottom of the EPL table on goal difference. Relegation is looming unless their form and fortunes change quickly under manager Vincent Kompany.
