February 13, (THEWILL) – Tunisia’s US Monastir took advantage of their home advantage and secured a 2-0 win over Tanzania’s Young Africans in their opening group stage match of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
The victory puts US Monastir second in Group D, behind TP Mazembe, who earlier defeated Real Bamako 3-1.
The home side started strong with Mohamed Saghraoui and new signing Boubacar Traore scoring headers from set pieces in the opening 45 minutes. Saghraoui opened the scoring after 10 minutes from a Haykeul Chikhaoui freekick, while Traore thumped home a header from a Chikhaoui corner delivery just five minutes later.
Despite US Monastir’s commanding lead, Young Africans tried to mount a comeback in the second half, with Fiston Mayele and Stephen Aziz Ki having shots saved by the keeper. However, their efforts were in vain, and US Monastir held on for the 2-0 victory.
