SAN FRANCISCO, November 18, (THEWILL) – While the ongoing qualifiers for the 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) have produced edge-to-edge football entertainment for fans of the game and many fixtures have either lived up to their billings or failed to spark, the real business for the teams involved is qualifying for Cameroon 2022.
So far, only five countries have crossed that threshold and booked a slot for the biennial tournament following the conclusion of Matchday four fixtures on Tuesday.
Disclosing this via its Twitter handle, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Wednesday, listed these countries as Cameroon, Senegal, Algeria, Mali and Tunisia. It added that there were still 19 spots up for grabs with two more Matchdays left.
Tunisia, the Carthage Eagles, booked their place after a 1-1 draw against the Kilimanjaro Stars of Tanzania on Tuesday, while the Eagles of Mali defeated the Brave Warriors of Namibia 2-1 on Tuesday.
The Desert Foxes of Algeria secured their ticket after playing a 2-2 draw against the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Monday, while the Lions of Teranga of Senegal won the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on Sunday.
Cameroon have an automatic spot as hosts.
