January 07, (THEWILL) –Â The prize money for the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon has been increased by the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The decision was made at Friday’s Executive Committee meeting in Douala, Cameroon, which was chaired by CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe.
The rise is in accordance with CAF’s aim to reward meritorious performance and elevate the prominence of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, and will take effect in the future edition, which will begin on January 9, 2022, at Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé.
Prize money for the new TotalEnergies AFCON will be:
• USD 5 million for the champions (an increase of USD 500,000)
• USD 2.75 million for the runner-up (an increase of USD 250,000)
• USD 2.2 million for the semi-finalists (an increase of USD 200,000)
• USD 1.175 million for the quarter-finalists (an increase of USD 175 000)
With the additions, the prize money for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations has increased by USD 1.850 million.
The Super Eagles, who defeated Cameroon domestic league champions Coton Sport 2-0 in a Friday warm-up match, will take on the Pharaohs of Egypt in their opening Group D fixture on Tuesday, January 11, under the guidance of caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen.
