January 31, (THEWILL) – The US men’s national team (USMNT) fell three points behind the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association (CONCACAF) table leaders after losing 2-0 to Canada on Sunday at the Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario.
Canada scored within the first 10 minutes of the tie to establish their advantage. Jonathan David took hold of the ball within the American half after Matt Turner’s botched goal kick, before assisting Cyle Larin.
The Canadian forward comfortably outskated Miles Robinson and Chris Richards to score in the lower left corner and give the Canadians the lead.
The US notched up the possession by controlling 64 percent of the ball and hitting 11 total shots to pile the pressure on their opponents. Brenden Aaronson and Weston McKennie both came close to tying the game before the final whistle, but neither were able to convert their chances.
In the end, the defensive errors of the USMNT allowed Canada the victory. Matt Turner, the goalkeeper, made a series of errors clearing the ball, while defenders Miles Robinson and Chris Richards allowed gaps in the backline for their opponents to exploit.
That was how Sam Adekugbe found the net in the dying minutes to make sure of Canada’s victory. Adekugbe outran the USMNT players trying to stop him before striking the back of the goal to secure the three points.
The USMNT will face Honduras in the final match of the January/February round of World Cup Qualifiers on Wednesday.
