January 14, (THEWILL) – Dani Carvajal has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Real Madrid official website. As a result, the defender will not play in the Spanish Supercup Final on Sunday against Athletic Bilbao.
The Spaniard had just recently recovered from a muscular ailment sustained in the Madrid Derby against Atletico de Madrid.
He put in a strong performance against Barcelona in the Semifinals, and his presence will be felt on Sunday, even though he should be back in the lineup next week.
Because Lucas Vazquez is not a natural right-back, he will now start on the right side of Real Madrid’s defensive line, which is an obvious downgrade.
Real Madrid, though, should be considered the favourites to defeat Athletic, since they have done so twice already this season.
Next Thursday, Los Blancos will travel to Elche for the Copa del Rey Round of 16, and Carvajal will most likely miss that match as well.
