September 01, (THEWILL) – Liverpool defeated Newcastle United 2-1 on Wednesday, at Anfield, thanks to a goal from substitute, Fabio Carvalho, in the 98th minute.
Alexander Isak, making his debut for Newcastle, just hours after securing his work visa, gave his new side the lead with a beautiful finish in the first half, but Roberto Firmino equalised in the second through a Mohamed Salah assist.
As the clock approached stoppage time, it appeared that Jurgen Klopp’s team would drop more points, but a late corner sparked a scramble in the goalmouth that resulted in Carvalho scoring for the second time in a week.
The visitors’ efforts aside, Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe, will be upset with the outcome despite the absence of important players, Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin, as they were on the very edge of taking at least a point before Carvalho found the winner.
On Saturday, Everton and Liverpool will meet at Goodison Park, with Newcastle hosting Crystal Palace later in the day.
