June 10, (THEWILL) – Celtic have announced the signing of Scotland left-back Kieran Tierney from Arsenal on a five-year contract. The 28-year-old defender returns to his former club after spending six years away from Celtic Park, having initially departed for the English Premier League in 2019.
Tierney originally made his senior debut with Celtic in 2015 and accumulated 170 appearances for the Scottish Premiership champions, netting eight goals during his first spell. The versatile full-back transferred to Arsenal in 2019 before spending the 2023/2024 season on loan with Real Sociedad in Spain’s La Liga.
Speaking about his return to Glasgow, Tierney said: “Everybody’s known for a few months and just to be here with the Celtic strip on again just feels amazing.” The defender acknowledged his development during his time away from Scotland, adding insights about his experiences abroad.
“When you move away from home, you grow up, you learn different things. I was in Spain (with Real Sociedad on loan) for a year, learning a different language and playing in a different league, so I’m definitely a different person,” Tierney explained. His loan spell in La Liga provided valuable experience in European football before his Parkhead return.
The Scotland international outlined his objectives for his second tenure with Celtic, stating: “My ambition is just for Celtic to be as successful as possible, retain our place at the top and continue to win trophies and do well for Celtic.” Tierney’s return strengthens Celtic’s defensive options ahead of the 20252026 campaign.
