October 17, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have received a major boost in their plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge after successfully acquiring the majority of a neighbouring plot of land from a local veterans charity.
The Blues hope to significantly expand the capacity of their 40,343-seat stadium, their home since 1905, which lags far behind the English Premier League’s largest venues in terms of potential matchday revenue.
Rebuilding stand-by-stand is not ideal, leaving two options: demolish and rebuild on site like Tottenham, or construct a new stadium elsewhere like Arsenal.
Chelsea’s land purchase indicates redevelopment on-site is preferred. Last month, it was reported the club agreed to a £65m deal for a 1.2-acre site next to Stamford Bridge owned by Stoll.
Stoll’s board met this month to decide whether to approve the sale. A statement, on Tuesday, announced they had agreed to sell the majority of the site to Chelsea’s owners, enabling them to establish new veteran housing and services.
