October 12, (THEWILL) – A 2-0 victory over 10-man AC Milan at the San Siro was all Chelsea needed to move to the top of Group E as they earned their first UEFA Champions League victory in Italy in 19 years.
The Blues’ previous triumph in Europe’s premier club competition on Italian soil was in November 2003 when they registered a 4-0 triumph against Lazio, and this win was just as straightforward after a disputed Fikayo Tomori red card.
The visitors took the lead in the 21st minute via a Jorginho penalty after Tomori, a former Chelsea defender, was sent off for tripping Mason Mount inside the penalty area.
Following Salzburg’s 1-1 draw with Dinamo Zagreb, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal that doubled the Blues’ advantage just before halftime, was enough to propel Graham Potter’s team to the top of the group.
From Group E, Chelsea is the favourite to advance to the round of 16 but up next for the team is a Sunday trip to Aston Villa in the EPL. Meanwhile, Milan know that they must improve both in Serie A and in Europe. They are next against Hellas Verona on Sunday too.
