August 16, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have reached an agreement with Southampton to sign 19-year-old midfielder, Romeo Lavia, according to reports monitored by THEWILL.

Lavia joined English Premier League champions, Manchester City, in 2020, but struggled for playing time, making just two appearances before moving to Southampton last summer for £10.5 million. The Belgian youngster went on to feature 34 times across all competitions for the Saints in his debut season.

Despite Lavia’s strong performances, Southampton were unable to avoid relegation from the top flight. However, the midfielder’s talents did not go unnoticed by Chelsea, who view him as an exciting prospect. Liverpool were also said to be interested in securing Lavia’s services, but the Blues ultimately won the race after agreeing to a transfer fee said to be around £53 million.

Lavia will now join Ecuadorian midfielder, Moises Caicedo, another highly-rated young player, as part of Chelsea’s rebuilt midfield under new owner, Todd Boehly. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping the duo can energise his squad for the upcoming campaign.
