November 03, (THEWILL) – Chelsea defeated Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to win their fourth straight Champions League match, with Denis Zakaria scoring the game-winning goal on his Chelsea debut.
Since signing on loan from Juventus during the most recent transfer window, Zakaria had had trouble breaking into the starting lineup, but his goal in the 30th minute — following Raheem Sterling’s earlier goal to level the score — proved to be the winner.
Before Wednesday’s match, Chelsea had already qualified for the knockout rounds as the top side of Group E. That was why Ben Chilwell’s hamstring injury late in the game, gave Chelsea and England cause for concern.
Chelsea rallied in a promising way following a 4-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday in the English Premiership and Dinamo, who could not mount a comeback, were ousted from Europe after finishing last in the group.
In their next match, the Blues have a crucial London derby against Arsenal as they return to English Premier League football on Sunday, while Dinamo will host Sibenik at home later in the evening of the same day.
