August 13, (THEWILL) – Chelsea and Liverpool kicked off their English Premier League campaigns with an entertaining 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Both teams underwent considerable change over the summer, but produced an end-to-end contest. Liverpool looked the slicker side early on as their new signings settled well, but Chelsea fought back to claim a point with VAR ruling against goals from Mohamed Salah and Ben Chilwell. Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Liverpool in the first half after a stunning team move, slotting home after good work from Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
However, Chelsea equalised through debutant, Axel Disasi, who swept in after the Reds failed to deal with a set piece. The second half saw chances at both ends. Liverpool thought they had a penalty after a Nicolas Jackson handball, but it was waved away by referee Anthony Taylor and VAR. Alisson Becker then made some important saves to keep Chelsea at bay as Liverpool pushed for a winner.
Both managers turned to their benches to change the game, with Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones coming on for Liverpool as they searched for more creativity and stability. Malo Gusto also came in in the 76th minute to replace an injured Reece James. However, the changes could not produce a winner for either side.
In the end, Chelsea and Liverpool had to settle for a point each. It was an entertaining start to the new campaign, with both teams showing they could be contenders this season despite undergoing transitions. The draw leaves room for improvement for both tough teams.
