April 02, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have announced the sacking of head coach, Graham Potter, after just seven months in charge.
This decision comes following a 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, with Potter overseeing only four wins this year, leaving Chelsea in 11th place on the Premier League table and 12 points off the Champions League places.
The club’s statement thanked Potter for his contribution and confirmed that he had agreed to collaborate with the club for a smooth transition. Bruno Saltor will take over as interim head coach, and the club’s sporting directors will lead the process of appointing a long-term replacement for Potter.
Co-owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali will ultimately make the decision. Despite Potter signing a five-year deal in September, his performance failed to meet the expectations of the club, with the January transfer window outlay of close to £300m failing to prompt a consistent upturn.
“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person,” said the co-owners in a statement. “We are all disappointed in this outcome. Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season.” Chelsea is set to face Liverpool in their next English Premier League game on Tuesday.
