June 12, (THEWILL)-Â In an update to the unfortunate event of the mid-match collapse of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen during their opening Euros 2020 football match against Finland as reported by THEWILL, the player regained consciousness before he was taken off the pitch.
Eriksen is presently in a stable condition after being resuscitated from his collapse during the Saturday match. He was transferred to a local hospital in Copenhagen where he will be given proper medical attention.
The incident happened off-the-ball and just before half-time with no-one around him. But the players and match officials knew something was wrong and called for medical assistance, which immediately took control of restoring him to consciousness.
In a show of fraternal support, the entire Danish squad formed a wall around Eriksen as the medical professionals worked to resuscitate him on the spot where he collapsed. As he was eventually being taken off the pitch, a Reuters journalist reported that Eriksen raised his hand to the crowd.
To corroborate the journalist’s report, a picture from Getty images showed Eriksen conscious as he was wheeled off to the relief of the football world, in particular, and the sporting community, in general.
In an official statement, UEFA later confirmed that Eriksen was stable and had been taken to a local hospital.
Also providing an update on the player was the Danish Football Association that tweeted: “Christian Eriksen is awake and is waiting for further examinations at Rigshospitalet. The match is temporarily postponed.”
UEFA added that there will be a crisis meeting between the two teams and match officials to decide the next steps, after it postponed the match on Saturday to give priority to the player’s revival.
An announcement will be made at 18:45 GMT.
