Although the hosts took the lead through a Pau Torres own goal, Los Blancos twice surrendered their advantage, with man-of-the-match Samuel Chukwueze, scoring two goals and an assist, including the winning goal in the final 10 minutes.
Villarreal equalised twice with substitute, Jose Morales levelling the score once again after Vinicius Junior had put Madrid back in front. Chukwueze then secured Villarreal’s victory with a superb curling effort from the edge of the box, leaving Madrid stunned.
Madrid saw a late penalty award overturned by VAR after Eduardo Camavinga’s run into the box led to an alleged handball from Aissa Mandi. The on-field decision was overturned following a VAR review, and Villarreal held on for a remarkable win.
Real Madrid will face Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals next, while Villarreal, after notching their first-ever League double over the champions, will play Real Valladolid in La Liga.
