May 31, (THEWILL) – Marin Cilic upset world number two Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to get to the quarter-finals of the French Open for the third time.
Medvedev had won all three of their prior encounters with Cilic, had yet to drop a set in the competition and was seen as one of the top contenders to challenge for the title at Roland Garros.
But, Cilic, who finished with 33 winners and did not face a single break point in a 6-2 6-3 6-2 triumph that lasted only one hour and 45 minutes, overwhelmed the Russian with a clinical display.
It is Medvedev’s biggest Grand Slam defeat, while Cilic is in his first major quarter-final since the 2018 US Open, and his third at Roland-Garros, having previously reached the last eight in 2017 and 2018.
Cilic will now face Andrey Rublev, who advanced after Jannik Sinner was forced to withdraw due to injury. The victor of that quarter-final should be favoured to advance to the final, as they will face either Casper Ruud or Holger Rune, who are both playing in their first advanced stages of a Grand Slam.
