December 11, (THEWILL) – Manchester City defeated 10-man Wolves, thanks to Raheem Sterling’s 100th Premier League goal. The league leaders dominated possession for the whole of the game, but few clear-cut chances were generated before Raul Jiménez’s two unnecessary bookings on the stroke of halftime handed them a commanding advantage.
Still, it took a difficult judgement midway through the half when Bernardo Silva’s cross struck Joao Moutinho, ostensibly beneath his raised arm but a very tight call, and a penalty was awarded, which was later confirmed by VAR.
Sterling’s penalty, which he struck into the middle of the goal to bring up his personal three-figure milestone spanning his time at Liverpool and City, capped off a great display.
After withstanding a barrage of pressure in the second half, thanks to heroic defensive efforts from goalkeeper Jose Sa, defenders Conor Coady and Max Kilman – the latter coming within inches of scoring when Ederson pushed over his header from Daniel Podence’s cross.
Sterling scored from the penalty spot to put his team ahead, and his goal was enough to give City the win and put them four points clear at the top. City will remain at the top of the table for at least another week as a result of this.
City’s next Premier League match is on Tuesday at home against Leeds United. Wolves travel to Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.
