September 24, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory over rivals Marseille on Sunday evening, despite being forced into an early substitution when star forward Kylian Mbappe picked up an injury.
The home side started brightly and deservedly took the lead inside eight minutes courtesy of an audacious looping free kick from Achraf Hakimi which caught out Pau Lopez in the Marseille goal. Marseille did threaten on the counter attack and should have equalised midway through the first half, but Vitinha headed wide from close range.
PSG’s night got worse when Mbappe was forced off injured after 30 minutes. Randal Kolo Muani scored to give the hosts a reason to celebrate again so that they went into break two goals to the good. The second half saw Goncalo Ramos, another new signing and Mbappe substitute, head home his first PSG goal to make it 3-0.
Marseille offered little in response as the Parisians comfortably saw out the game before Ramos grabbed his second late on following a rapid counter attack. The 4-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of PSG’s dominance, secured despite the early loss of Mbappe.
Les Parisiens will be hopeful that the injury to their French striker is not serious and he will be able to rejoin the squad for their domestic and continental ambitions in this campaign as the new look Luis Enrique team begins to jell together.
