
August 08, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday commended Team Nigeria for its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom. In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President congratulated the contingent for impressive display, while praising the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, under the direction of Sunday Dare.
With 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze medals, Team Nigeria had their best ever showing at a Commonwealth competition, placing seventh overall in the medal standings.
The President expressed his happiness at camaraderie in the camp during the Games, which had a beneficial impact on the team’s spirits and helped the Nigerian contingent to not just win a record number of medals but also break records en route.
Adeshina wrote: “President Buhari urges the officials to work with all relevant stakeholders to build on the success of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, begin early and earnest preparations to surpass this spectacular achievement in upcoming competitions.
“President Buhari looks forward to a rousing reception from Nigerians for members of Team Nigeria Birmingham 2022, even as he assures all stakeholders that youth and sports development will remain a priority for this administration.”
