February 09, (THEWILL) – Organisers of the proposed European Super League are ramping up their efforts to bring the competition to fruition, with plans to include up to 80 teams.
A new manifesto, published on Thursday, outlines that clubs will be categorised into divisions and will be guaranteed a minimum of 14 matches per season. The intention is for participating clubs to continue playing in their domestic leagues, while also participating in the Super League.
The manifesto, published by A22, the company behind the Super League, reveals that nearly 50 European clubs and stakeholders have been consulted since October. The vast majority of these clubs reportedly share the view that the very foundation of European football is under threat and it is time for a change.
Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22, stated that clubs are often forced to sit on the sidelines while key decisions are made and their sporting and financial foundations crumble. The 10-point manifesto includes provisions for player health and investment in women’s football, as well as outlining the aim to make the competition a mass-participation event.
Currently, only three clubs – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – have publicly expressed their support for the Super League. However, fears remain that the competition could harm existing domestic leagues and the financial sustainability of participating clubs.
