August 14, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid and Chelsea announced on Monday that they have reached an agreement for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to join the Spanish club on a season-long loan.
The 28-year-old will provide cover for Thibaut Courtois, who suffered a torn ACL in training last week, as THEWILL previously reported. Courtois’ injury comes as a major setback for Real Madrid. The Belgian keeper was a standout performer last season, making several key saves to keep Los Blancos competitive domestically and in Europe.
Courtois’ absence leaves Real with just one senior goalkeeper, 24-year-old Andriy Lunin. In Arrizabalaga, Real have secured an experienced replacement familiar with playing at the highest level. The Spanish international joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for a record £71 million fee. However, he lost his starting place and will now seek to revive his career back in La Liga.
For Chelsea, allowing Arrizabalaga to leave on loan made sense after they signed a new first-choice keeper this summer. Robert Sanchez was brought in from Brighton to take over between the sticks at Stamford Bridge. Letting Arrizabalaga go out on loan avoids any potential conflict over the starting slot.
